Yahoo To KickStart Social Networking Efforts.

More Social Networks coming our way. This time it’s Yahoo who plans to create a website where users and employers can find each other easier. This sounds like a great idea to find jobs while you’re in college but I’ve already seen some websites like this but aren’t to catchy or nice to play with. Yahoo has been trying to start a Social Networking site, even tried to buy Facebook but didn’t seem to work out for them. Thi idea of the KickStart Social Networking it’s just theories right now, no official release if it’s ever going to actually work out. I hope it does, because I’ll need a job when summer comes around again.

iPhone Hacker Goes To My School.

One of the most talked about person recently, is the iPhone Hacker. His name is George Hotz and he goes to RIT. I just found out about this this afternoon. He is now a freshmen at my school who is getting a lot of publicity and buzz. I wonder if he will get special treatment from some teachers for being a short time “celeb”. Kudos to him and I hope he enjoys the long painful orientation week. I hope I get the chance to meet him around campus. He might be a future boss considering that there are rumors saying that he has a contract already to work for some company. You can read his blog Finding JTAG on the iPhone to learn how to unlock an iPhone. And welcome to RIT kid.

The Facebook Economy.

Everyone knows facebook is the 2nd biggest social networking site. And it’s about to take the number 1 spot in anytime. What most people don’t know is that Facebook started as a project by two students to be private inside their school. After they saw the growing success in their school, they decided to open it to other universities and colleges. In about a year Facebook grew to be one of the top social networking sites specialized for students. Today it is open to High School’s, businesses and anyone else. Because everyone wants a piece of the market and make some money. The creators of Facebook decided to make it “open” so any programmer can add their piece to the application. And that’s how the applications started happening. With Graffiti, Super Wall, Super Poke and other dumb applications out there, developers get a piece of this market. Some made some pretty good money out of it. All of this came to mind because of the CNN article called The Facebook economy. It’s a great article that teaches you a lot of the business aspect of these websites.

Fidel Castro Dead ?

I’ve just found out about the rumor that Cuban president Fidel Castro might have died or is dying. Apparently the rumors started yesterday after people found out he had to go to the hospital and unusual movements were going on. A couple of blogs are also talking about this rumor. Even celebrity gossiper Perez Hilton has announced that he believes it’s true. Fidel Castro has been said to be dead previous times and were false. But this time the rumors came out of no where, not popular media. Even Forbes wrote an article about this. I don’t know how true this is but if anyone else has something to say about it, maybe some inside information than feel free to share because the truth will be found sooner or later.

GPhone Closer Than Expected ?

The rumors of a Google Phone (GPhone) are back and say that it might be ready in 2 weeks. According to a post in TechCrunch the GPhone might be ready to release in two weeks but Google hasn’t said anything about and they have denied rumors previously. But with Google looking interested in the airwaves and cellphones with the struggle of trying to buy some airwaves, anything is possible. And here is the image of what the GPhone might look like according to TechCrunch…

Firefox Campus Edition.

Firefox announced that they are releasing a Firefox “Campus Edition”. I wasn’t sure what they meant by “Campus Edition” until I read more about this browser at Wired.com. This “new” Firefox brings a bunch of bundled plug-ins and addons. I find it really dumb to release such a thing when a user could do this with it’s regular Firefox and then add whatever they need. The whole browser is based on a general student concept and doesn’t concentrate in particular majors, which would be more difficult but would give me a better reason to use it. This “Campus Edition” is a publicity thing. I think it will fail unless they market it in most campus.

Hugo Chavez Gives A Bad Name To Socialism, Again.

Socialism is a great way of living. In it’s basic form, socialism means society has the power and rules, not the goverment. But people like Hugo Chavez give socialism a really bad name. Hugo Chavez just changed the law to allow a president to run 7 terms. He didn’t force this upon congress, they actually voted for this. Now every time people will think about Socialism they will think about Hugo Chavez. Now, he did do a couple of good things for the poorer society in Venezuela but now he’s taking too much power. It’s kind of the same way Fidel Castro gave a bad name to Capitalism. Capitalism doesn’t mean rule a country all by yourself and kill your opponents. It means that everyone gets equality treated and everything equally, which works great in theory but because of selfish people who believe they’re better than others they don’t like sharing equally. I hope that one day someone could make a good use of what Socialism and Capitalism really are all about, and take the best of them as many countries have done (universal health care).

SuprNova Is Back !!!

When the world of torrents started Suprnova.org was without a doubt the king of torrents. After a couple of legal battles and shake downs in the torrent world, suprnova had to call the quits because legal battles where way too expensive for them and they weren’t the favorite to win the battle. The only place to win this battle was The Pirate Bay by making their own server in a place where there are no laws about exchanging files. But now Suprnova is back thanks to The Pirate Bay. The former owner of Suprnova known as sloncek donated the domain to The Pirate Bay so they can bring it back to life and manage it. And as of today they’re officially back in business.

iPhone at Apple Refurbish Store.

The only way to buy “cheap” Apple products is to buy them refurbished. I bought one iPod Nano once from the refurbished store and it still works great, no complains. I know a few people who bought refurbished laptops and have never had any problems with them either. Now the iPhone is finally on apple’s refurbished website and it’s $100 dollars cheaper. After this price drop I would consider buying an iPhone. I still consider it a bit expensive but maybe that’s because I’m not big on mobile phones. But with this price drop and the rumors of a cheaper iPhone Nano vesion maybe there is hope for those of us who want a “cool” phone but don’t want to pay so much for them. I’m pretty sure a lot more people will buy the iPhone because of this new price drop.

FLVIX, Free Online Video Converter.

I’ve had so many problems trying to convert video formats from AVI to MPG to MOV and so on. I was never successful at it either. But finally someone came up with the great idea of having an Online Video Converter called Flvix. It seems brand new but it’s a start. I haven’t tried it yet but I won’t doubt on remembering the website next time I want to convert a video from one format to another, specially those damn .mov. Did I mention that it’s free to use this service?
